Australian footballer Joshua Cavallo has signed for Peterborough Sports FC, marking a significant chapter in both his career and the club’s history. The 25-year-old, who made global headlines in 2021 as the first openly gay male footballer playing in a top-flight league, joins the National League North side on a free transfer.
Cavallo, formerly of Adelaide United in Australia’s A-League, announced his move to the UK earlier this month, citing a desire to start “a new life” with his fiancé. His signing with Peterborough Sports - affectionately known as “The Turbines” - comes as a surprise to many, given the club’s position in the sixth tier of English football.
Despite the modest size of the club, which drew an average of just 322 fans last season to their 2,300-capacity Bee Arena, Cavallo expressed pride and excitement about the opportunity. “Football has taken me on an amazing journey, and I’m so excited to be at a club that truly sees my potential,” he wrote on Instagram. "I’m ready to pour everything I have into playing for the badge, for the fans, and for everyone who supports us. Time to make some noise and write our history."

Peterborough Sports, not to be confused with Peterborough United, have been making waves under the ownership of local businessman Tim Woodward. Cavallo is the club’s seventh signing of the summer, as they aim to push for promotion with an expanded budget and renewed ambition.
In his first interview with the club, Cavallo highlighted the importance of feeling safe and supported as an LGBTQ+ athlete. “Here, I feel completely at home,” he said, reinforcing the club’s inclusive ethos.
