Florida ranked least safe state for LGBTQ+ community
Florida has been named the most dangerous state in the United States for LGBTQ+ individuals, earning an “F” grade and the lowest ranking in SafeHome.org’s annual State Safety Report Card. The state scored just 35.69%, placing it at the bottom of the list, behind Louisiana.
The ranking reflects two key factors: the presence of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and the rate of hate crime reporting. Under Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida has introduced several controversial laws, including the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill restricting classroom discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity, and measures limiting access to gender-affirming care for minors. Additionally, only 44% of law enforcement agencies in Florida reported hate crime data to the FBI, raising concerns about accountability.
Advocacy groups such as the Human Rights Campaign and Equality Florida have issued travel advisories warning LGBTQ+ individuals about visiting or relocating to the state. Local businesses and community events have also felt the impact, with drag performances being cancelled or moved indoors due to fears of licence revocation under new restrictions.
While several proposed anti-LGBTQ+ bills failed to pass in the 2025 legislative session, the overall climate remains hostile. Surveys show that 38% of LGBTQ+ Americans have considered moving to safer states, and 71% avoid public spaces due to fear of discrimination or violence.
