Disney+ has cancelled its 'queer-coded' reboot of Goosebumps, the teen horror series inspired by R.L. Stine’s bestselling books, after two seasons amid debate over LGBTQ+ representation on screen.

The reboot, produced by Sony Pictures Television, was praised for its fresh take on the classic franchise, blending supernatural thrills with contemporary themes. Among its standout features was the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters, notably a same-sex romance between teen protagonists Cece and Alex. The storyline was widely appreciated for its authenticity and for portraying queer identity as a natural part of the characters’ lives.

It’s about showing kids that being different is okay - and that they’re not alone.

While Disney has not officially cited the show’s LGBTQ+ content as the reason for its cancellation, the move comes amid growing scrutiny of queer-inclusive programming. Some conservative commentators criticised the series for what they described as “inappropriate” themes for younger audiences. However, supporters argue that such representation is vital for fostering empathy, inclusion, and self-acceptance among young viewers.

Industry observers note that Goosebumps is the third queer-inclusive series to be cancelled by Disney+ in recent years, following Willow and The Acolyte. This pattern has raised concerns about the company’s long-term commitment to diversity, despite its public pledges to support inclusive storytelling.

Fans have taken to social media to express frustration, with many highlighting the importance of seeing LGBTQ+ characters in mainstream, family-oriented content. “It’s not about pushing an agenda,” one viewer wrote. “It’s about showing kids that being different is okay - and that they’re not alone.”
