Destanee Aiava condemns tennis’ ‘racist, misogynistic, homophobic’ culture in explosive farewell
Australian tennis player Destanee Aiava has issued a blistering denunciation of the sport’s culture, describing professional tennis as “racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile to anyone who doesn’t fit the mould” as she confirmed that 2026 will be her final year on tour. The 25-year-old made the announcement in an emotionally charged Instagram post, sparking widespread discussion across the tennis world.
Aiava, who has Samoan and Pacific Islander heritage, accused the sport of failing to support players who do not conform to long‑standing traditions and expectations. In her post, she likened tennis to a “toxic boyfriend”, saying the sport had stripped her of her confidence, health and self-worth. She also directed her anger at online abusers, gamblers who had sent her threats following match losses, and those who criticised her appearance and career.
Her remarks follow years of simmering tensions between Aiava and the tennis establishment. She previously spoke of feeling “weird and hostile” treatment when selected as an unused reserve for Australia’s United Cup team, and has often described feeling out of place in the sport’s elite pathways.
Despite moments of promise - including reaching the second round of the 2025 Australian Open and a stunning upset over then‑world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka earlier in her career - Aiava said the personal cost of remaining in the sport had become too great. She plans to leave tennis at the end of the season and start afresh in 2027, describing the decision as necessary for her wellbeing and future.
