Communities across the United States are grieving the tragic loss of Lia Smith, a 21-year-old trans student-athlete whose life was marked by brilliance, courage, and advocacy. Smith, a senior pursuing a double major in computer science and statistics, was found dead on 23 October near Middlebury College in Vermont. Authorities have confirmed her death as suicide.

Originally from California, Lia was a diver on the Middlebury Women’s Swimming and Diving team and an active member of the Chess Club, Japanese Club and Women in Computer Science. She was also a passionate advocate for trans rights, speaking openly about her experiences and challenges as a trans student-athlete in a climate that remains fraught with discrimination and misunderstanding.

In February, Lia participated in a panel hosted by Queers & Allies, where she spoke candidly about the politicisation of trans healthcare and the importance of community support. “Know that there are people in your community that are here for you and care about you,” she said, offering hope and solidarity to others navigating similar paths.

Middlebury College President Ian Baucom expressed profound sorrow in a message to the campus community: “She was a gift to us and we are so grateful that she was - and will always remain - a member of our Middlebury family.” Baucom also acknowledged the pain Lia’s family is enduring, stating, “As president, and far more as a fellow parent, I ache for them. This is a profound loss that nobody should have to endure”.

Tributes have poured in from students, faculty, and friends, many remembering Lia’s sharp wit, kindness, and unwavering spirit. One parent wrote, “She brought smiles and laughter to so many at MIDD. Our hearts are broken. She deserved so much more”.

Studies show that trans people face significantly higher rates of suicidal ideation and attempts, often exacerbated by societal stigma, isolation, and lack of access to affirming care.

Middlebury College has announced plans to hold memorial gatherings and continues to offer support services to students and staff. The community is being urged to extend compassion and care to one another during this difficult time.
