“Colourful, welcoming and alive”. Visit Greece introduces new section promoting Greece as a prominent LGBTQ+ friendly destination

Visit Greece, the official website of the Greek national tourism organisation (EOT), has introduced a new section promoting Greece as a prominent LGBTQ+ friendly destination.

In February 2024, Greece became the first Christian Orthodox-majority country to legalise same-sex marriage. Same-sex couples will now also be legally allowed to adopt children after Thursday’s 176-76 vote in parliament. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the new law would “boldly abolish a serious inequality”.

The April Visit Greece newsletter titled ‘With the colours of the rainbow’, boasts content promoting Athens as a city “colourful, welcoming and alive” and Thessaloniki as “Open to all”.

Visitors can explore events and art exhibitions featuring works by LGBTQ+ artists or delve into ancient Greek mythology with exhibits highlighting queer themes in archaeology museums across the country.

Among the most popular destinations for the LGBTQ+ community is Mykonos, hailed as the “queen of gay nightlife”. However, its appeal extends beyond partying, offering serene coastal retreats and relaxation options.

Other equally enticing destinations on Visit Greece include Lesvos and more specifically the town of Eresos. Santorini, Skiathos, Corfu and Crete are also highlighted, each offering their unique charm and welcoming atmosphere.
