Local photographer Chris Jepson has launched a Kickstarter to publish a photobook/zine of Beyond The Binary – A Celebration Of Trans Joy, which features more than 50 portraits and stories that capture authentic trans joy, promoting community spirit and empowering the trans community through visibility.
In May 2024, Chris worked with local trans groups and individuals to create and exhibit a new project, Beyond The Binary – A Celebration Of Trans Joy, to coincide with Trans+ History Week. You can still view the panels online here, and the solos portraits and stories online here.
Chris said: “Collaborating with trans groups, including Trans Pride Brighton, Clare Project, Trans Can Sport, TReNBI FC Brighton, Misfits and Transkaters, as well as numerous trans individuals, I’m eager to bring this project to life with your support.
“There are loads of options for rewards from signed copies of the book to archive prints and even a collector’s edition – and Christmas is coming so maybe you have a special friend you could gift one to!”

Support independent LGBTQ+ journalism
Scene was founded in Brighton in 1993, at a time when news stories about Pride protests were considered radical. Since then, Scene has remained proudly independent, building a platform for queer voices. Every subscription helps us to report on the stories that matter to LGBTQ+ people across the UK and beyond.
Your support funds our journalists and contributes to Pride Community Foundation’s grant-making and policy work.
