Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has confirmed that teachers in the UK have the right to ask pupils to refer to them using the gender-neutral title Mx, which signals what might be seen as a progressive shift in recognising and respecting the identities of trans and non-binary educators within the British education system.

Speaking to LBC, Phillipson stated, “I think teachers can make that request,” acknowledging the importance of allowing individuals to express their gender identity in professional settings. While the Department for Education clarified that such requests cannot be enforced, the emphasis remains on mutual respect between staff and pupils.

The honorific Mx, which dates back to the 1970s, has gained traction in recent years as a dignified alternative for those who do not identify within the binary framework of male or female. Its inclusion in school settings not only validates the identities of trans and non-binary staff but also fosters a culture of acceptance and understanding among students.

This announcement has been met with support from LGBTQ+ advocates, who see it as a meaningful step toward affirming the rights of trans and non-binary individuals in the workplace.
