Perth, Australia, has been named the presumptive host city for the 13th edition of the Gay Games, set to take place in 2030, pending final confirmation by the Federation of Gay Games (FGG) in November.
The announcement follows an extensive and competitive bidding process that began in January 2024, with 25 cities from across five continents expressing interest in hosting the global LGBTQ+ sporting and cultural event. After a series of evaluations, presentations, and site inspections, Perth and Denver, USA, emerged as the final two contenders.
Perth’s bid, which was developed from the ground up by local LGBTQ+ sporting organisations, impressed the FGG with its emphasis on community engagement, inclusivity, and cultural vibrancy. The city hosted a four-day site inspection in July 2025, during which FGG-appointed inspectors toured proposed venues, met with local stakeholders, and assessed the city’s readiness to host the Games.
Laurie Butterly, a representative of the Perth bid team, said: “Perth is so incredibly honoured to be named the presumptive host for Gay Games XIII 2030. This is for our LGBTQ+ community who have worked tirelessly to support this bid. We can’t wait to bring the world to Perth in 2030."
The Gay Games, founded in 1982, are open to all participants regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or athletic ability. The event is expected to draw over 10,000 participants and generate significant cultural and economic benefits for the host city. The 2018 edition in Paris, for example, contributed over $70 million USD to the local economy.
The 2030 Games will follow the 2026 edition, which is set to take place in València.
