A bold new reimagining of the beloved musical Wicked is set to take the stage at the Clapham Grand this Sunday, featuring an entirely trans and non-binary cast. Titled Trans Wicked, the production marks a landmark moment in British theatre, coinciding with London Trans+ Pride weekend.

The one-night-only performance, scheduled for 27 July, is directed by award-winning playwright Tabby Lamb, who also appears in the show as the narrator, Ozma - a nod to the canonically trans character from L. Frank Baum’s Ozma of Oz. The production promises all the iconic musical numbers from the original Broadway hit, alongside inventive staging and theatrical flourishes.

Leading the cast are Sex Education star Anthony Lexa as Glinda and drag king Sé Carr as Elphaba. They are joined by Teddy Hinde (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) as Fiyero, Sam Buttery (KaosWreck) as Doctor Dillamond, and Gigi Zahir - also known as drag performer Crayola - in dual roles as Madame Morrible and Boq. E Round completes the principal cast as Nessarose and The Wizard.

The London Trans Choir will lend their voices to the production, adding a powerful choral element to the show’s most stirring moments.

The idea for Trans Wicked was born from a conversation between Carr and Lamb about the barriers trans performers face in traditional casting. “Theatre is so typecast that if you don’t look a certain way, you won’t get it,” Carr has said in interviews. The production aims to challenge those norms and celebrate trans talent in a genre that has historically excluded them.

Proceeds from the event will go towards supporting London Trans+ Pride, which takes place the day before the performance.
