A New Chapter: Joshua Cavallo, one of football's most prominent LGBTQ+ advocates, moves from Australia to UK
Joshua Cavallo, one of football's most prominent LGBTQ+ advocates, has moved from Australia to the UK following the end of his contract with Adelaide United.
Cavallo, 25, rose to international prominence in 2021 when he became the first openly gay male footballer actively playing in a top-flight league. His courage and visibility have since made him a global symbol of inclusion in sport. After four years with Adelaide United, Cavallo is now preparing for a new chapter in his career, with sources confirming he is finalising a deal with a European club - widely believed to be in the UK.
Though the specific club has not yet been officially named, Cavallo’s move is being hailed as a significant moment for both football and LGBTQ+ representation in sport. His new management agency, Wax Talent - a UK-based LGBTQ+ talent agency - is reportedly guiding the transition, signalling a strategic and symbolic relocation to a more prominent European stage.
Cavallo’s time at Adelaide was marked by both triumph and challenge. While injuries and limited playing time affected his on-field contributions in recent seasons, his off-field impact was profound. Adelaide United praised him as “more than just a footballer,” crediting him with helping to foster a more inclusive culture within the club and the broader A-League community.

In a farewell message, Cavallo expressed gratitude for his time in Australia: "It’s not goodbye forever but now, it’s time to leave the nest with my fiancé by my side.
"Football and life have taken me further than I ever imagined, and new opportunities have led to a new life waiting for us across the world.
"I never imagined that living my truth would unlock doors from the pitch to every corner of my personal life."
