"A complete mess." Lib Dem candidate Ben Dempsey slams decision to postpone Sussex and Brighton mayoral elections
The Liberal Democrats have accused the government of “shambolic indecision” after confirming that the first-ever mayoral election for Sussex and Brighton will be postponed until 2028. The vote, originally scheduled for May 2026, will now take place two years later following what ministers describe as “necessary time for local government reorganisation”.
The delay is part of a wider move affecting several planned mayoral elections across England, as the government seeks to finalise new combined authorities with devolved powers over transport, housing and economic development. Communities Secretary Steve Reed defended the decision, insisting that “devolution is strongest when it is built on strong foundations” and warning against “rushing the process”.
However, opposition parties have reacted angrily, branding the move an “affront to democracy”. The Conservatives called it “a scandalous attempt to subvert democracy”, while Reform UK accused Labour of “blatant political manoeuvring” amid poor polling figures.
For the Liberal Democrats, the decision represents a major setback for their campaign to bring a “fresh, green and inclusive vision” to Sussex. Ben Dempsey, the Lib Dems' candidate for Mayor of Sussex and Brighton, said: “This is a complete mess, created by a government that seems to be defined by shambolic indecision. The people of Sussex are now being denied the chance to vote for that future, eroding our democracy and wasting public money that was being invested in preparing for the role of Mayor.
"This decision shows the government either isn’t serious about delivering growth and sustainability in Sussex, or is too incompetent to deliver it. The only silver lining is that the election in 2028 will take place with a fairer voting system.
"The Lib Dems will continue promoting our positive vision for a prosperous, tolerant and green future for Sussex, starting with the county council elections in May.”
