Austria won the 2014 Eurovision song contest this evening with their controversial entry Rise like a Phoenix sung by bearded Austrian drag entertainer Conchita Wurst.

In an emotionally charged night in Copenhagen the audience took the Austrian performer to their hearts and made it very clear from the start who they wanted to win this years contest, the most exciting for many years.

Votes for Russia were booed by the live audience registering their anger at Russia’s treatment of LGBT people.

On receiving the trophy, Conchita said: “This night is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom” and clutching her award she sobbed: “We are unity and we are unstoppable”!

Austria came first with 290 points, The Netherlands second with 238 points and Sweden came third with 218 points.

United Kingdon ended a disappointing 17th out of 26 songs.
