By Liran Notik, Scene Magazine

We had such a lovely time visiting Brighton Bear Weekend, where we stopped by the stall of the incredible LGBTQ+ mental health charity, MindOut. There, we met two passionate team members: Peter Nesbitt, Charity Director, and Phil Ayling, Advocacy Worker.

In our conversation, Peter and Phil gave us real insight into the heart of MindOut’s work. As they explained, MindOut is a mental health service run by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer people who have experience with mental health challenges. Their mission? To improve the wellbeing of LGBTQ communities — and to make mental health a shared, community concern.

Through their chat with our reporter, it was clear that both Peter and Phil are driven by a deep commitment to Community and individual empowerment, Mental wellbeing, Co-production and client participation, Challenging stigma and discrimination, Transparency and innovation, Diversity, inclusion, and respect for individuality, Supporting staff wellbeing and professional development.

MindOut’s presence at Brighton Bear Weekend highlighted just how vital their work is — and how open, supportive spaces like these events can spark meaningful conversations around mental health.

We left the stall feeling inspired, informed, and grateful for everything MindOut is doing for LGBTQ+ people in Brighton and beyond.
