Hove MP calls for Baroness Thatcher tribute

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove and Portslade, has backed a Parliamentary Motion which calls for a tribute to be made to the late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher by renaming one of Britain’s international airports.

Early Day Motion (EDM) 1262 – Baroness Thatcher Tribute – was proposed in order to recognise the international impact of Margaret Thatcher. A number of airports around the UK have already been renamed after famous individuals, including the George Best Belfast City Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Mike said:

“The precedent to name airports after significant figures has already been set, so I am right behind renaming a major airport after Thatcher. Personally I would like to see Gatwick Airport, which was named after an old manor and literally means ‘goat farm’, changed to the far more enticing Thatcher International Airport.”

EDM 1262 – Baroness Thatcher Tribute reads:

“That this House notes the sad news that Baroness Thatcher died following a stroke; recognises that she changed not only the face of politics but the face of a nation, through her dedication, commitment, energy and determination, that she secured a successful future for this country that many at the time thought unthinkable and that her enduring legacy will be to leave a nation in a better state than she found it; and calls on the Government to commemorate Baroness Thatcher’s colossal achievements by renaming one of the UK’s international airports, Thatcher International Airport as an enduring testament to her contribution to the world.”
