Fresh off not one but TWO thrilling Coachella headlining sets, Mother Monster aka Lady Gaga gave the biggest concert of her career over the weekend, Saturday, 3 May, when she brought ‘Mayhem on the Beach’ to over 2.1 (or 2.5 according to some websites) million fans on Rio de Janeiro‘s Copacabana Beach.

This is one for the history books!

The free concert (paid for by the city in an attempt to revitalise Rio’s economy) became the highest attended concert ever by a female artist, the Queen of Pop Madonna, set this record last year with her final performance of her Celebration Tour at the same location in Brazil for 1.6 million fans.

Oh and Rio’s biggest show of all time is Rod Stewart’s New Year’s Eve concert at Copacabana Beach in 1994, with over 3.5 million in attendance omg.

During the opening chords of the iconic Born This Way reverberated, a goosebumps moment unfolded.

In unison, fans raised vibrant rainbow-coloured fans, the rhythmic snapping echoing the beat of the music as they moved them through the air and Gaga exclaimed in the middle of performing “Let’s light up the beach for your pride!”

Brazilian police announced in a statement HERE yesterday the arrest of two individuals following the discovery of plot to detonate a bomb at the concert. According to the statement, “Operation Fake Monster” led to the identification of suspects involved in promoting hate speech and the violent radicalisation of teenagers online. The police also revealed that the group behind the planned attack had been disseminating hate speech primarily directed at children, adolescents, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Gaga’s spokesperson said “We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning. Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks. Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.”
