Dr Sam Hall resigns from WellBN amidst NHS scrutiny: A loss for trans healthcare in Brighton

Dr Sam Hall, a respected advocate for trans healthcare and former lead clinician at Brighton’s WellBN practice, has stepped down from his role amid an ongoing NHS investigation into gender-affirming care for under-18s.

WellBN, known for its inclusive and affirming Trans Health Hub, has been under scrutiny since June, when NHS Sussex and NHS England launched a review into the clinic’s prescribing practices for young people experiencing gender dysphoria. The investigation focuses on whether the care provided aligns with national clinical guidance, particularly around hormone treatments.

Dr Hall - a trans man himself - has long championed a patient-centred, informed consent model of care. He played a pivotal role in making WellBN a safe and accessible space for trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse individuals. His departure marks a significant moment for the trans healthcare landscape in the UK, especially as access to timely, affirming care remains a pressing issue for many.

In a statement earlier this year, WellBN described the NHS-imposed restrictions on prescribing as “deeply unjust,” noting that the clinic had been forced to pause new prescriptions for under-18s under threat of closure. Despite this, the practice has continued to support existing patients and remains committed to providing gender care for adults.

Community members and advocacy groups have expressed concern that the investigation may further limit access to life-saving care for trans youth. Many have praised Dr Hall’s leadership and dedication, highlighting the importance of affirming healthcare in a system where waiting times for NHS gender services can stretch into years.
