Rüdiger Dikty-Daudiyan, Liberal Democrats candidate for the Queen's Park by-election in Brighton & Hove:
The Liberal Democrats have a long-standing and detailed policy platform on LGBTQ+ rights, positioning ourselves as the leading party on these issues because we place equality at the very core of our policy-making process. Our vision is one of complete equality, backed by a concrete plan of action.
Crucially, our commitment extends to our trans and non-binary family. This fight against discrimination is more urgent than ever. With hate crimes targeting trans people at disturbing levels, both nationally and here in our city, my commitment to safety is absolute.
As an openly proud gay man, I have seen and felt the need for our community to be safe. I know the fear that an act of hate can instill. That’s why my first priority for Queen’s Park is to work tirelessly with Sussex Police and local community groups to ensure that LGBTQ+ hate crimes are treated with the utmost seriousness, focusing on prevention, robust reporting and accountability.
As a priority, I’d like to see an increase in police patrols to ensure our community feels safer where we live, work and love.
My other key priorities for our ward are rooted in the lived experiences of our community. I will champion truly inclusive education in our local schools, implementing our party’s policy to eradicate LGBTQ-phobic bullying and create safe learning environments.
I will also fight to protect our vital local LGBTQ+ venues and community spaces, which are the lifeblood of our community in our city.
Queen’s Park may not be the epicentre of gay Brighton, but a lot of issues are similar due to the proximity to Kemptown’s Gay Village and many locals face the same challenges including safety, tolerance and the desire to live peacefully.
Unlike other candidates who might offer warm words during Pride month, my commitment is personal and year-round. We would not have achieved the rights we have without our loyal allies, but this isn’t simply about allyship for me — it’s about fighting for my own community, my friends, my family, and my husband.
My passion for a better, more inclusive Brighton & Hove is not academic; it is deeply personal. I am committed to building a community where every LGBTQ+ resident can live with dignity, safety, and without fear.
I look forward to earning your vote and working tirelessly for the community that I am proud to be a part of and lucky enough to call home.
