Children and young people learning to play a musical instrument through Brighton and Hove City Council’s music service for parents on low income, who used to receive an 80% subsidy on fees, will now receive a 100% subsidy. Parents presently receiving a 50% subsidy will now receive an 80% subsidy.
Changes to the music service will benefit approximately 500 young musicians across the city.
Evidence shows that learning music improves learning skills, fosters team work, builds life skills and encourages creativity.
Cllr Sue Shanks, Chair of the Children & Young People Committee said:
“One of our key priorities for music education in the city is to ensure that all children and young people have the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument.
“Every child should be able to fulfil their musical and creative potential, and this change will help us achieve this goal.”
