This year’s Brighton Fringe is as weird and wonderful as always, and with a printed brochure running to 102 pages, how do you know where to start?

Well, we at Scene magazine want to take the slog out of it, so here are some of my top picks of the queer and quirky shows you can see. As they have variable dates and times, I’m listing my favourites in alphabetical order!

So here are the first 10, with more to follow in Part 2.
At War with Myself – why go where you’re not wanted, asks a gay theatre maker – getting sober and joining the army when it’s still against the law.

Deadnamed – The trans debate with an actual trans person, can you imagine it? It’s a funeral like no other and you’re invited.
Field of Anise – A powerful story of love, survival and sacrifice. The play follows two men risking everything for freedom.
Glenda and Rita Live! – Two black and white actresses from Hollywood’s Golden Age celebrate their cinematic career in this musical romp.
Junkies – Mike wants a younger man and Adam needs a sugar daddy. It’s a perfect match, but not in the way either expects.

King Lear is Dead: Long Live King Lear – an eerie tragicomic new take on Shakespeare’s classic. Come for the murder and stay for the musical numbers.
The Pink List – A thought-provoking one-person musical, inspired by the untold stories of gay men in post-war Germany.
Provocateur – Let ex-dominatrix Letitia Delish grab you by the collar in her erotic new show Sex Sells. Selling out is just one flogging away.
And finally for this list – Places I Never Think Of – A queer retelling of Eastern European myths and folklore, blending live music, polyphonic singing, storytelling and puppetry.

Look out for Part 2 with Dave the Bear and his Burly Boys, a dark comic cabaret on board a cruise ship and the perennial Lady Boys of Bangkok.
