# Vigil honouring Michael Causer, 18 years after his death in a homophobic attack, to launch Knowsley Pride

The life and legacy of **Michael Causer** will once again take centre stage this summer as **Knowsley Pride** begins with an annual vigil marking 18 years since the teenager's death.

For many across Merseyside's LGBTQ+ community, the vigil is far more than the opening event of a Pride celebration. It is an opportunity to remember a young gay man whose death became a catalyst for change and helped reignite Pride in the Liverpool City Region.

Michael was just 18 when he died in August 2008 after suffering injuries in a homophobic attack at a house party. His death shocked communities across the region and prompted widespread calls for greater action to tackle anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime and discrimination.

Nearly two decades later, his name remains closely linked to the fight for equality in Merseyside. Campaigners and community leaders have long argued that the public response to Michael's death played a significant role in inspiring the return of **Liverpool Pride** after more than 15 years without a city-wide Pride event.

This year's Michael Causer Vigil will take place on **Sunday, 2 August** at **Court Hey Park** and will officially open Knowsley Pride 2026\. The event is expected to bring together members of the LGBTQ+ community, allies, local organisations and residents to reflect on Michael's life and the progress that has been made since his death.

The vigil will begin a week of events across Knowsley celebrating LGBTQ+ identity, visibility and inclusion. Organised with support from **One Knowsley**, the programme will culminate in **Rainbow in the Park** on **8 August**, featuring live performances, entertainment and community activities.

**Racheal Jones**, chief executive of One Knowsley, said the week reflects the strength and diversity of the borough's LGBTQ+ community. "Knowsley Pride has grown into something very special, with this year feeling like another step forward," she said.

"It's not about one event, it's about a whole week of activity that reflects the breadth and strength of this community; from the vigil on Sunday through to Rainbow in the Park on Saturday, every part of this week belongs to Knowsley."
