# Trans women banned from competing in women's category at University of Oxford

Trans women have been barred from competing in the women’s category at **University of Oxford** rowing clubs following a policy change aligned with **British Rowing** regulations.

Under the updated rules, trans women are no longer eligible to race in female rowing categories. However, British Rowing states that trans and non-binary athletes may still compete in an “open” category.

Previously, trans women were permitted to participate in women’s events provided their testosterone levels remained below a specified threshold for a sustained period.

Oxford colleges with affiliated boat clubs have been instructed to update their Rules of Racing in line with the governing body’s requirements, with the university overseeing the process.

A spokesperson for the university said: “The University of Oxford remains committed to being an inclusive institution where everyone is treated with dignity, respect and consideration.

“In competitive sport, university sports clubs and committees are required to follow the eligibility criteria and policies set by the relevant national governing bodies. The university has engaged with students throughout this process and will continue to support clubs in meeting their obligations under the law and sporting regulations.”

The changes have prompted concern and disappointment among some students and rowing clubs, who argue the move undermines efforts to create inclusive sporting spaces for transgender athletes.

**Somerville Boat Club** said the policy shift “threatens our long-standing values of inclusivity and friendship”, while the president of the university’s LGBTQ+ society said they were “personally investigating the matter”.

**Wadham College Boat Club** also criticised the decision, saying it was “deeply saddened” that transgender women were being excluded from women’s competition.

The debate follows similar developments at University of Cambridge, where trans rowers were also reportedly barred from women’s events last year.
