Non-binary singer, **Sam Smith**, has criticised the BRIT awards which pushed back plans to eliminate gendered categories, with other music awards such as the Grammys having already done so. Smith, who has already won three BRIT awards prior to coming out as non-binary, posted a statement on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/CMUSoNlnyjE/?utm%5Fsource=ig%5Fembed) expressing disappointment that the awards would continue to use gendered categories for this years ceremony.

They said: *“Music for me has always been about unification not division. I look forward to a time where awards shows can be reflective of the society we live in. Let’s celebrate everybody regardless of gender, race, age, ability, sexuality and class.”* A spokesperson for the BRITs told [*Music News*](https://www.music-news.com/news/UK/138895/Sam-Smith-blasts-the-BRIT-Awards-for-keeping-their-Male-and-Female-categories?ref=scenemag.co.uk) in a press statement that the award organisers are *“committed to evolving the show and the gendered categories are very much under review.”*

They continued: *“Any changes made to be more inclusive need to be just that – if a change unintentionally leads to less inclusion then it risks being counterproductive to diversity and equality. We need to consult more widely before changes are made to make sure we get it right.”* The 2021 BRIT awards are due to take place on **May 11** at London’s O2 Arena, after being pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.
