# PREVIEW: Brighton’s midsummer music season

Those always-innovative folk at **Brighton Early Music Festival** (BREMF) have a varied and eclectic set of offerings indoors and out next weekend.

Highlights include: **In Transit To The Baroque** on **24 June** at the glorious **St Bartholomew’s Church**. A new style of singing emerged in Florence in 1600, and this concert tells a parallel story about instrumental music of the period, including a feast of toccatas and fantasias. The early evening concert is followed by **Transiting The Night Hours** by BREMF’s Consort Of Voices, directed by **Deborah Roberts**, delivering sacred music and chants from monastic services – you can drop in or stay a longer course ino the night.

On **25 June** the scene moves to the **Royal Spa** in **Queen’s Park** where there will be two events. **Endo The Earthworm** is a family show with puppets and music for nature lovers of all ages. It can all be seen at the **Crew Club** in **Whitehawk**. Later in the day you can catch **Bailemos!** by the ever-popular group **Joglaresa,** accompanied by **Brighton Community Choir**. Get your dancing shoes on for a concert that will literally be electrifying- celebrating nuns, knights and roses,with songs of sin and subversion.

**Folk In Transition** is also at the Royal Spa. From the British Isles to the New World, Brighton folk trio **Hope Cove**, present traditional ballads, Irish jigs, Scottish reels and Appalachian bluegrass. The Spa is also the venue next weekend for a workshop and concert called the **Daksha Yagna**. It’s a menu of Indian music and dance, based on a powerful story from the Hindu scriptures.

And finally **Eliza Is The Fairest Queen** gives us popular songs from the reigns of both our queens called Elizabeth, with 17h century songs mingling with hits from **Vera Lynn**, **Aretha Franklin** and **The Beatles** – quite a Royal mashup!
