New Yorkers came together on **Saturday, March 8** to call for the preservation of equal rights among the LGBTQ+ and transgender communities after the brutal killing of **Sam Nordquist**, a 24-year-old transgender man.

The **March for Justice for Sam** began in **Washington Park** late morning before proceeding to the state capital. Participants aimed to call on New York legislators to protect their rights.

In February 2025, **Sam Nordquist**, a 24-year-old transgender man from **Minnesota**, was killed after being tortured for over a month. Nordquist had been tortured between December 2024 and February 2025 before being killed, according to a police news release on February 14, 2025.

Police subsequently arrested five people, aged 19 to 38, who were charged with second-degree murder. On February 20, two more suspects, a 29-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man, were charged with the same offence.

**Jon Moore,** a marcher, said, “Trans people fought for queer rights for the past century and they’re being erased from like the Stonewall website, government websites; their evidence is being erased from public life, and that can’t happen. We need to show physically that we are present to support the trans community; that they exist, and they deserve to be validated.”
