**Nevada** has become the first **US** state to remove a same-sex marriage ban from its state constitution after over two-thirds voted to amend a clause which defined marriage as the union of a man and a woman. According to **[USA Today](https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/11/05/nevada-first-state-constitutionally-protect-same-sex-marriage/6183655002/?ref=scenemag.co.uk)**, Nevada was one of 30 states with a constitution that defined marriage as strictly between a man and a woman as per a 2002 amendment to the state’s marriage laws.

This definition has been altered to ‘couples, regardless of gender’, which protects LGBTQ+ marriage rights regardless of any moves made by the Supreme Court. **Briana Escamilla**, the Human Rights Campaign’s Nevada director, [said](https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/nevada-becomes-first-state-to-remove-same-sex-marriage-ban-from-its-constitution/ar-BB1aHYzJ?ref=scenemag.co.uk): *“This overwhelming majority should be a reminder that LGBTQ+ equality is not just the right thing to do, it is exactly what Nevadans want.”*

**André C. Wade**, state director of an LGBTQ+ civil rights organisation, [added](https://eu.rgj.com/story/news/2020/11/05/election-results-2020-nevada-first-state-constitutionally-protect-same-sex-marriage-lgbtq/6169118002/?ref=scenemag.co.uk): *“We applaud Nevadans who voted overwhelmingly to amend the state’s constitution to recognize all marriages, regardless of gender, by removing the phrase ‘only a marriage between a male and a female person shall be recognized and given effect in this state’ and instead, enshrine the principles of marriage equality to which all Nevadans are entitled and deserve.”*
