Police are investigating an assault in **Somerset** as a suspected transphobic hate crime after a woman was allegedly targeted with anti-trans abuse before being attacked.

The incident happened in **Cavalier Way**, **Wincanton**, at around 9.15pm on **29 August**. **Avon and Somerset Police** said the victim was walking along the street when she was approached by a group of four teenage boys who began making transphobic comments towards her.

According to police, the woman challenged the remarks before two members of the group allegedly assaulted her, striking her in the face and kicking her in the ribs.

The victim suffered bruising to her right eye, facial injuries and a cut lip, and later required hospital treatment.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: “The victim had been walking along the street when a group of four teenage boys started making transphobic comments towards them.

“After challenging them, two of the group assaulted the victim, striking her to the face and kicking her in the ribs. She sustained bruising to her right eye, a cut lip and facial bruising.”

Officers met the victim in hospital and took an initial statement. The force confirmed it is treating the incident as a suspected hate crime because of the comments allegedly made before the assault.

Police are appealing for witnesses and have released descriptions of two key suspects. Both are described as white males aged between 16 and 18, around 5ft 10in tall and wearing grey tracksuits. One is said to have mid-length curly brown hair. The group was reportedly travelling in a small black hatchback car.

The attack has prompted a strong response from **Sherborne Pride**, which said the victim is a member of its community. In a statement, the organisation said it was “heartbroken” by what had happened and urged anyone with information to come forward.

“It’s easy to show up for Pride when there are flags flying, music playing, performances to share and glitter on our faces,” the group said.

“But we are heartbroken today and this is when showing up really matters.”

Sherborne Pride said the woman had attended her first Pride event alone before returning this year with her mother, describing the assault as a stark reminder of why Pride events remain important.

“This is why Pride exists. Not just for the sequins and the party,” the group said.

“For the night somebody is attacked. For the morning after. For the frightened parent who doesn’t know how to make people listen.

“For making damn sure that hate is not allowed to happen quietly.”

The organisation also urged people not to speculate about the incident on social media and instead pass any information directly to the police.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or has information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Avon and Somerset Police on 101, quoting reference **5226249101**.
