A new “Village Angels” scheme, designed to keep people safe during nights out in Liverpool city centre, was launched by **LGBT Foundation** at the weekendand will run for an initial eight‑week period.

Funded through the **Home Office**’s **Hyper‑Local Policing Fund**, the volunteer‑run service will see teams of “Village Angels” patrol key areas of the city’s nightlife, including **Mathew Street**, the **Cavern Quarter** and **Victoria Street**, between **9pm - 3.30am** every **Saturday**. Volunteers will wear fluorescent pink tabards as they support vulnerable people, offer friendly conversation, and direct those in need towards local support services.

The Angels will work closely with **Merseyside Police** officers and be directly linked with both the **Citywatch CCTV** control room and the force’s contact centre via Airwave radios, allowing for fast, coordinated responses when required. During their shifts, they will also have access to facilities at **St Anne Street Police Station** for briefings and refreshments.

Inspector **Jack Woodward** of Merseyside Police’s **City Centre Team** praised the scheme, describing the Angels as a “fantastic addition” to the city’s safety infrastructure. He noted their particular role in strengthening trust with the LGBTQ+ community and encouraging victims of crime, including hate crime, to report incidents and seek support.

The LGBT Foundation expressed excitement at bringing the well‑established programme to Liverpool, with volunteers helping shape the service during the trial period. The charity says the Angels are equipped to assist with everything from first aid and emotional support to helping people get home safely or report hate crimes.

**Gareth Watson**, Lead & Community Safer Manager at LGBT Foundation, said: “We’re excited to be bringing the Village Angels to Liverpool, helping make sure that we’re there for anyone who needs a bit of help on a night out.

“Whether it’s someone who needs first aid, someone to talk to, or just a little help getting home we’re going to be on hand to make sure everyone has a safe night! We look forward to working in partnership with Merseyside Police to help ensure safety for our community. ”
