# LGB Alliance chief says GB News "champions rights of lesbians, gays and bisexuals" despite investigations into anti-LGBTQ+ broadcasts

The chief executive of **LGB Alliance** has defended **GB News** and praised the broadcaster's coverage of lesbian, gay and bisexual issues, despite the channel currently facing **Ofcom** investigations over programmes accused of promoting anti-LGBTQ+ hate speech.

**Kate Barker-Mawjee**, CEO of LGB Alliance, made the comments in a post on X on 10 August, writing: "GB News has consistently championed the rights of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals. They are right to call out the homophobia of the straight TQ+ movement."

The intervention comes as GB News remains under scrutiny from media regulator Ofcom following thousands of complaints about comments made during broadcasts concerning LGBTQ+ people.

According to reports, Ofcom recently launched investigations into two GB News programmes after receiving complaints alleging that presenters and guests used discriminatory and potentially harmful language about LGBTQ+ communities. The regulator is examining whether the broadcasts breached rules relating to harm, offence and discrimination.

Barker-Mawjee's comments are likely to further fuel debate around the broadcaster's coverage of LGBTQ+ issues and wider divisions over trans rights within parts of the community.

LGB Alliance, which was founded in 2019, says it campaigns for the rights of lesbian, gay and bisexual people. However, the organisation has faced sustained criticism from many LGBTQ+ groups, charities and activists who argue that its positions on transgender issues are exclusionary and undermine efforts to achieve equality for all LGBTQ+ people.

The Ofcom investigation follows complaints by **Good Law Project** and 15,000 members of the public.

Good Law Project lawyer Matt Gill said: “The hateful trope about LGBTQ+ people broadcast by GB News puts the community at risk.

“When GB News tried to make a link between LGBTQ+ people and paedophilia before, Ofcom found the broadcast was highly offensive and yet did nothing about it. The regulator must impose meaningful sanctions to stop this rogue channel repeating these vicious lies again and again.”

The dispute comes at a time when trans people in the UK continue to report high levels of discrimination, harassment and barriers to healthcare. Recent research from organisations including TransActual has highlighted concerns about growing hostility towards trans communities, with many respondents reporting that media coverage and political rhetoric have negatively affected their wellbeing.
