# Labour launches trans equality campaign

The **UK Labour party** has launched a trans equality campaign ([**Labour Trans Equality**](https://twitter.com/LabourLte?ref%5Fsrc=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1352357957858701312%7Ctwgr%5E&ref%5Furl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinknews.co.uk%2F2021%2F01%2F25%2Flabour-trans-equality-launch-transphobia-keir-starmer-non-binary-rights%2F&ref=scenemag.co.uk)) after being criticised for failing to address internal transphobia. There were a handful of incidents where party members expressed anti-trans views or aligned themselves with trans-exclusionary groups. Labour MP **Rosie Duffield** resigned over a transphobia scandal, and London-based councillor, **Dave Ward**, publicly [shared his support](https://www.scenemag.co.uk/labour-politician-backs-lgb-alliance/) for the controversial anti-trans group, the LGB Alliance.

As a result, the party has set up the campaign with [five key aims](http://labourtransequality.org.uk/labour-trans-equality/?ref=scenemag.co.uk): *“To increase the representation and voice of trans/non binary people within the Labour Party, to encourage more trans/non binary people to join and work within the Party, to be a strong and clear voice for trans/non binary members and their allies who are supporters of the Labour Party, to work with other groups within the Party, including the National Policy Forum to promote trans/non binary equality, and to support and encourage trans/non binary members to take an active role at all levels within the Labour Party.”*

The new group is co-sponsored by Wolverhampton councillor **Anwen Muston** – the first trans Labour councillor elected after 2000\. Muston said: *“I believe that if we are to deliver effective and inclusive public services, we need Labour members of parliament and councillors who reflect their diverse communities, which of course include trans/non-binary people. There is much work to be done.”* The group is also sponsored by **Emily Brothers**, **Heather Herbert**, **Suzanna Hopwood**, **Dr Natacha Kennedy**, **Cllr Anwen Muston**, **Cllr Osh Gantly**, **Dr Heather Peto**, and **Astrid Walke**.
