As the newly elected parliament is opened, over the coming days we will be profiling some of the new LGBTQ+ MPs who have been elected to the House of Commons.

**Their inclusion on our site does not indicate that they campaigned on LGBTQ+ issues, although we will report as such if they have, but that they are openly ‘out’ and as such have the opportunity to represent our broadening communities in parliament.**

Dr. Kieren Mullan is the new, openly gay MP for **Crewe and Nantwich**. He won what had previously been a marginal seat from Labour by 8,508 votes. Having unsuccessfully contested elections for two seats in the Midlands in 2015 and 2017\. He benefited from the clear pro-Brexit message coming from the central conservative campaign having had articles concerning education published in both *Conservative Home*, and *Brexit Central*.

Although not campaigning explicitly on LGBT issues he stated through his website in September 2018 that what the country needs is “*more MPs who have real life experience”* and promoted himself as “*a different sort of MP”* and was listed on the **Conservative LGBT+** website as an openly LGBT candidate in 2015.

Dr Mullan’s parents were both from the public services, his mother a nurse and father a police officer and before elected himself worked for the NHS in A&E on “*projects aimed at improving the whole of the NHS”*. He has also spent four years as a school governor and volunteer policeman and self promoted his family background and personal commitments to public services as evidence of his suitability for the role of MP.
