The Green Party looks set to once again lead **Brighton & Hove City Council** following two resignations and a suspension in the majority **Labour Party**.

The Greens now have a one-seat majority (19 councillors to Labour’s 18) and Labour has agreed to *‘step aside and allow the Greens to form a new administration’*.

A joint statement from the leaders of the Labour Party, the Greens and the **Conservatives** said they *‘are working in the best interests of all in Brighton & Hove to provide stability following the recent resignations in the Labour Group which have changed the balance of power in the administration of the council’*.

The statement continued: *‘We recognise that by custom the largest elected group forms an administration of the council. We are currently looking at the best options to ensure a smooth transition of any changes to the current administration.’*

The future of the city’s council will be discussed at a full meeting tonight, **Wednesday, July 22**.

Labour’s **Kate Knight** and **Nichole Brennan** resigned to sit as independents less than a week after the suspension from the Labour party of **Anne Pissaridou** over allegedly anti-semitic social media posts. She subsequently resigned as chair of the council’s **Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee** but retains her party membership, although she is not allowed to attending meetings or speak on behalf of the group.
