# Gay Olympian Gus Kenworthy announces engagement to boyfriend Andrew Rigby

Olympic freestyle skier **Gus Kenworthy** has announced his engagement to boyfriend **Andrew Rigby** after proposing during a romantic holiday in **Mallorca**, Spain. 

The 34-year-old athlete, who represented Great Britain at the **2026 Winter Olympics** after previously competing for the United States, revealed that he popped the question on **4 August** during a trip off the Spanish island's coast. 

Kenworthy proposed on a secluded island after taking Rigby on what he described as a "little adventure" by boat from Mallorca. Speaking to *People*, the Olympian said he had arranged a picnic overlooking the sea before asking his partner to marry him. 

Following the proposal, the couple were surprised by six friends who had been waiting on a chartered boat to help celebrate the occasion.

Sharing the news on social media, Kenworthy posted photographs from the engagement and joked: "He said he'd think about it!" 

The couple have been together for around two years. They first crossed paths in Sydney nearly a decade ago before reconnecting at a mutual friend's 40th birthday celebration in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2024\. After a period of long-distance dating between Los Angeles and Sydney, they later moved to New York together. 

Rigby admitted the proposal came as a complete surprise. "We've talked about this a lot obviously, but I thought this was just a relaxing vacation," he told *People*. "To say I was shocked was an understatement. And then to see our friends there immediately after Gus proposed? Wow." 

The pair's engagement comes after a busy summer that included trips to **Berlin Pride** and **WorldPride Amsterdam**. 

Kenworthy became one of the most high-profile openly gay athletes in the world after coming out publicly in 2015\. The silver medallist has since been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport and wider society.
