# Elliot Page urges lawmakers to protect trans youth

Elliot Page came out as trans in 2020

Trans actor **Elliot Page**, known for his roles in *Umbrella Academy* and *Juno*, has urged **US** lawmakers to protect trans youth, following a string of anti-trans laws across multiple American states. Page spoke out against two bills [recently proposed](https://www.scenemag.co.uk/montana-introduces-anti-trans-bills/) in **Montana,** which, if successful, could see trans athletes in public schools banned from participating in sporting categories which align with their gender identity, and trans people under 21 could be denied gender-affirming healthcare.

He [tweeted](https://twitter.com/TheElliotPage/status/1350192729008046082?ref%5Fsrc=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1350192729008046082%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1%5F&ref%5Furl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinknews.co.uk%2F2021%2F01%2F19%2Felliot-page-trans-bills-montana-youth%2F&ref=scenemag.co.uk): *“Dear Montana Legislators. Please vote no on HB 112 and HB 113\. These bills harm trans youth and hurt all of us. Join the fight to protect trans youth.”* Page also shared a statement from the **ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)**, which affirmed that the bills were *“harmful”*. The ACLU said: *“Research shows that trans youth whose families support their gender identity have a 52% decrease in suicidal thoughts, a 48% decrease in suicide attempts, and a significant increase in self-esteem and general health.”*

It continued: *“Denying best-practice medical care and support to trans youth can contribute to depression, social isolation, and self-hatred. Denying this care would likely raise suicide rates among young trans people in Montana.”* Other states such as [**Mississippi** ](https://www.scenemag.co.uk/mississippi-bill-could-ban-trans-youth-healthcare/)and [**North Dakota**](https://www.scenemag.co.uk/north-dakota-proposes-anti-trans-bill/) have also introduced bills which could prevent young trans people’s access to sports and healthcare.

Page has been a vocal supporter of the trans community, and came out on social media at the end of 2020\. He [wrote](https://twitter.com/TheElliotPage/status/1334037241883209728?ref=scenemag.co.uk): *“I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive…I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.”*
