The leader of **Brighton & Hove City Council** has expressed solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community following the attack at **Berlin Pride**, while reassuring attendees that extensive preparations are in place ahead of this weekend's Brighton & Hove Pride celebrations.

Councillor **Bella Sankey** issued a statement after the incident near Berlin's Christopher Street Day Pride celebrations, where a vehicle was driven into crowds close to the event, leaving one person dead and a number of others injured. The attack prompted the cancellation of several Pride-related events and led to community vigils across the German capital.

Responding to the incident, Sankey said: "We are deeply saddened by the attacks at Berlin Pride and our thoughts are with all those affected."

The council leader also reaffirmed Brighton & Hove's support for the LGBTQ+ community as one of the UK's most prominent Pride cities prepares to welcome thousands of visitors this weekend.

"We stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and, as we look forward to Brighton & Hove Pride this weekend, we want to reassure all those attending that we are working closely with Brighton & Hove Pride, **Sussex Police** and our other partners to keep everyone safe."

The attack in Berlin has sent shockwaves through LGBTQ+ communities across Europe. Thousands gathered for a vigil near the **Brandenburg Gate** in the aftermath, with community leaders speaking of grief, solidarity and the need to continue standing up for LGBTQ+ visibility and equality.

Brighton & Hove Pride is one of the largest Pride events in the UK and is expected to attract tens of thousands of people for a weekend of celebrations, performances and community events.

Sankey said organisers were focused on ensuring the event remains a positive reflection of the city's values.

"We look forward to Pride being a celebration of the diversity, joy and, above all, the unity of our community."

The statement comes as Pride organisers and local authorities across Europe continue to emphasise the importance of visibility, inclusion and community in the wake of the Berlin attack, while maintaining plans for upcoming Pride events.

Brighton & Hove Pride takes place this weekend, bringing together LGBTQ+ people, allies, residents and visitors from across the UK in what organisers describe as a celebration of equality, diversity and belonging.
