# Biden administration sets up group to address needs of trans Americans

The **White House** recently announced the formation of a governmental group that will be working across all state departments to advance the rights of transgender Americans. An [official statement](https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/06/30/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-advances-equality-for-transgender-americans/?ref=scenemag.co.uk) explained that the Interagency Working Group on Safety, Inclusion, and Opportunity for Transgender Americans was set up to *“help drive federal responses”* to the high levels of violence and discrimination that trans people are facing.

The group is now due to review policies *“that are upstream drivers of violence and poverty for transgender individuals, including homelessness, employment discrimination, violence and abuse, and bullying and rejection at school.”* The White House also released a [toolkit](https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Trans-Equality-Toolkit%5FREFORMAT-2%5FWHCO-fix.pdf?ref=scenemag.co.uk) to outline practices that support trans inclusion and equality. All government departments will be following these steps while also providing resources for trans people who have faced discrimination.

President **Joe Biden** has shown support for the trans community during Pride month, tweeting: *“To transgender Americans across the country — especially the young people who are so brave — I want you to know your President has your back. During Pride Month — and all the time.”* At the beginning of June, he issued his [first official Pride proclamation](https://www.scenemag.co.uk/biden-issues-proclamation-in-honour-of-pride-month/), breaking years of silence from the Trump administration.
