# 2006 unpacked from Top of the Pops to Lance Bass coming out to Moscow Pride and everything in between

If there's one thing I love, it's revisiting old pop culture moments. It's like flipping through a scrapbook filled with flip phones, oversized sunglasses, trucker hats and **Juicy Couture** tracksuits instead of family photos. Maybe it's a millennial thing but few years trigger nostalgia quite like 2006....which is 20 years ago by the way! Wild.

2006 was a cultural melting pot of blockbuster films, reality TV obsessions, celebrity scandals, chart dominating music and the first signs of stars who still dominate headlines today. I'm still struggling to accept that 2006 was two decades ago....like what?! How?! Wayyyy before **TikTok** though,streaming and influencers we were all glued to the tabloids, obsessed with **MySpace** and loading songs onto our **iPod s**o pop your Juicy Couture tracksuit on and let's take a trip back to one of the most iconic years of the decade and dive in....head first!

If there was one thing dominating the official **UK** charts in 2006 it was **The X Factor**. At both the beginning and end of the year graduates from the show's second and third series were literally everywhere. **Shayne Ward**, **Chico Slimani** and **Leona Lewis** all bagged number one singles while Shayne also topped the album charts.

Leona won The X Factor becoming the show's first ever female winner. *A Moment Like This* shattered records almost immediately, selling a massive 50,000 downloads in its first half hour alone. The song went on to sell more than half a million copies in its first week. A remarkable achievement during a period when physical sales were generally declining if you ask me or even if you don't ask me, it's still a remarkable achievement and that is that.

It was becoming super clear that reality TV wasn't just creating stars anymore, it was creating chart domination.

While X Factor acts were ruling the official UK charts though, **Rihanna** and **Beyoncé** were transforming into global superstars right in front of us.

Remember when everyone used to always sing TO THE LEFT TO THE LEFT?! 

Queen Bey literally taught those of us who didn't know their lefts and rights. Oh and a little known 16 year old country singer named **Taylor Swift** was just beginning her journey in 2006 into superstardom too. Her debut single was *Tim McGraw* followed by her self titled debut album that same year. It's wild to think there was once a time before Taylor Swift was Taylor Swift and her stadium tours and friendship bracelets.

Several familiar faces from the 90s were also enjoying successful comebacks....**Take That** completed one of pop's greatest comebacks with *Patience* which was their first number one single in a decade. Their album *Beautiful World* also stormed to number one proving the band's return was far more than just a reunion cash grab while **Baby Spice** aka **Emma Bunton** reappeared on the pop landscape with *Life in Mono* oh and **All Saints** returned with their third studio album *Studio 1*.

**Justin Timberlake** had the world in a chokehold with *SexyBack* proving he was more than capable of escaping the boy band label and **NASA** launched the **New Horizons** spacecraft to **Pluto** oh and in the same yearPluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet! Not by NASA but by the **International Astronomical Union** (**IAU**) during a general assembly vote in **Prague**. NASA adopted and follows this scientific classification.

Meanwhile, actor **Neil Patrick Harris** came out in 2006 as did JT's fellow \* **NSYNC** bandmate **Lance Bass**, a moment that generated huge headlines and marked an important step forward for LGBTQ+ visibility in mainstream media. 18 year old me actually fancied him more than JT anyway. It's true I promise!

In 2006 activist **Nikolay Alexeyev** founded **Moscow Pride** and organised **Russia**'s first ever Pride parade. Nikolay was met with extreme official hostility and **Moscow** authorities banned the Pride event and all LGBTQ+ public visibility by labelling them as an extremist organisation which attracted global attention and became a symbol of the growing battle over LGBTQ+ visibility in Russia. While LGBTQ+ visibility was growing in pop culture, 2006 was also the first full year that same sex couples could enter civil partnerships in the UK. **Brighton** long regarded as the country's unofficial gay capital had been one of the first cities in **England** to host the landmark ceremonies the previous December marking a major step forward for equality baby! The internet was beginning to reshape the music industry in 2006....**Lily Allen** became one of the first artists to build buzz through MySpace by sharing early demo tracks like *LDN*.

This online success helped her gain a record deal but she wasn't the only one doing this. So many musicians used MySpace to connect directly with fans. Basically like how new artists are discovered now on TikTok but yeah....*LDN* was and still is a bop. Legal music downloads exploded and for the first time digital sales were becoming powerful enough to compete with physical formats. Speaking of digital sales, in 2006 one super lucky 16 year old from the US named **Alex Ostrovsky** downloaded the one billionth song sold through **iTunes**. Oh the song was *Speed of Sound* by **Coldplay** and **Apple** rewarded him with an **iMac**, not one, not two, but ten iPod's, a $10,000 iTunes gift card and even funded a scholarship in his name at the **Juilliard School of Music**. Not bad for buying a song, right?!

The impact of downloads could also be seen in the charts. **Gnarls Barkley**'s *Crazy* became the first UK number one to reach the top based on downloads alone. 

**Ne-Yo**'s debut single *So Sick* surged to number one thanks to strong digital sales. Looking back I think this was basically the moment the future of music arrived.

Of course every new era comes at a cost....as the internet transformed how we consumed pop culture, some beloved institutions quietly disappeared. The iconic British music magazine **Smash Hits!** published its final issue which was honestly so sad and then **Top of the Pops**, a British television institution since 1964 in case you didn't know, aired for the last time in 2006\. Generations had grown up watching their favourite artists perform on that legendary stage, it first aired in 1964 so even my mum and dad grew up watching TOTP so seeing it disappear felt genuinely surreal and sad, even for them, not just us millennials. It gets worse....the traditional Saturday morning **CD:UK** came to an end after decades on air. I'm still not over it and don't think I ever will be.

> For anyone who grew up racing downstairs on a Saturday morning for CD:UK or religiously tuning into Top of the Pops every Friday night, 2006 marked the end of an era.

I can't feel nostalgic about 2006 and not think about **Nelly Furtardo**. Nelly released her third studio album, *Loose* which spawned *Promiscuous* (featuring **Timbaland**), *Maneater* and *Say It Right* and the rest is history. We had it so good in 2006! I reckon Nelly will celebrate the 20th anniversary of *Loose* this year at some point some how....surely?! Watch this space!

**Jessica Simpson** released *A Public Affair* in 2006 and it still slaps to this day IMPO. I'm still shocked it wasn't number 1\. I'll admit the official music video is unhinged though....in the best way!

Listen up, y'all, 'cause this is itttttt....remember when **Fergie** from the **Black Eyed Peas** released her debut solo album in 2006?! *The Dutchess* was a cultural reset.

*Fergalicious* is surely one of the defining hits of the 2000s?! I said it. 2006 was an amazing year for the **Arctic Monkeys** too. Their second single *When The Sun Goes Down* went straight to number one while their debut album *Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not* sold more than 360,000 copies in its first week. They swept up so many awards and became a household name and basically very quickly became one of Britain's most exciting bands. At the **NME Awards** they won awards for best new band, best group and best single for *I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor.* 

(I still prefer the **Sugababes** cover though....oh and the 2006 lineup consisted of **Keisha Buchanan**, **Heidi Range** and **Amelle Berrabah**. You're welcome). Elsewhere names like **Kanye West**, **Kaiser Chiefs** and **James Blunt** were collecting awards and cementing their place in music culture although actually at the 2006 **MTV Europe Music Awards**, Kayne sparked controversy by interrupting the show after losing best cideo to **Justice vs Simian** insisting his *Touch the Sky* video should have won. The outburst was an early glimpse of the headline grabbing awards show controversies that would later define his public image long before that infamous Taylor Swift incident in 2009....

Reality TV remained a national obsession with **Celebrity Big Brother** turned **Chantelle Houghton** into an overnight celebrity, while **Big Brother** (series 7, an absolute fan favourite and aired the same year as Celeb BB) captivated viewers all summer introducing unforgettable housemates including fan favourite **Nikki Grahame** and eventual winner and Brighton boy **Pete Bennett** whose openness about living with Tourette's syndrome won widespread praise. Openly gay Canadian housemate **Richard Newman** wasone of the show's most outspoken and popular personalities too. At a time when LGBTQ+ representation on mainstream television was still relatively limited, Richard's visibility helped make him one of the most memorable housemates of the series, for me anyway!

Meanwhile, shows like **America's Next Top Model**, The X Factor and **The Hills** continued to attract huge audiences, helping create a new generation of reality TV stars. Over on the **Disney Channel**, **Hannah Montana** introduced us to **Miley Cyrus** while **High School Musical** transformed **Zac Efron** into an overnight teen heart throb. TV also gave us future binge-worthy classics including **The IT Crowd**, **Dexter** (which is on **Netflix** at the moment FYI) and **Ugly Betty**. Also....the energy drink **Relentless** was launched in 2006\. Random I know but my brother was obsessed with them even over **Red Bull**.

The world was left stunned by the sudden death of **Steve Irwin**. One moment we were watching **The Crocodile Hunter** wrestle crocodiles and handle deadly snakes with his trademark enthusiasm and the next we were mourning a man who had spent his life teaching us to respect and protect wildlife. While we're on the subject of crocs, let's talk **Crocs**. The footwear brand sold an astonishing 21 million pairs in 2006\. I spent years making fun of them before finally trying a pair on as a joke only to discover they felt like walking on clouds. I now own a pair myself but they're strictly reserved for gardening duties! I can't write about 2006 and not mention WAGs.

During the 2006 **FIFA World Cup** the WAGs became celebrities in their own right. While England crashed out to **Portugal** on penalties tabloids were just as obsessed with **Victoria Beckham**, **Cheryl Cole** (**then Cheryl Tweedy**) and the glamorous entourage following the squad around **Germany**. Sometimes the WAGs seemed to attract almost as much attention as the football itself. World Cup fever dominated the summer though with a string of England songs filling the charts and *Three Lions* making yet another comeback. 

Football and pop culture had rarely been so closely intertwined. Mainly thanks to the WAGs though I'd say! Not football or WAGs related but another debut that became impossible to escape in 2006 was *Everytime We Touch* by **Cascada**. 

Although it peaked at number two, it went on to become one of the biggest dance tracks of the decade and remains a certified 2000s anthem. After so much anticipation **Amy Winehouse** released her second studio album *Back to Black*, a record that would go on to define her career and earn widespread critical acclaim. Deeply inspired by her turbulent relationship with **Blake Fielder-Civil**, the album captured raw emotion and heartbreak with every lyric resonating with honesty and vulnerability.

Amy began writing songs at just 14 years old and was propelled to international stardom following the release of *Back to Black* in 2006\. As her profile soared, she became a constant presence in the British media while navigating intense personal struggles, complicated relationships and the pressures of sudden global fame. Her voice, distinctive style and undeniable talent ensure that her legacy continues to endure. Meanwhile openly queer band **Scissor Sisters** were at their commercial peak in 2006 dominating the charts with *I Don't Feel Like Dancin'* and proving that unapologetically queer pop could achieve mainstream success. 

They bagged their first ever UK number one single with *I Don't Feel Like Dancin'* and their album *Ta-Dah* also went straight to number one so they were simultaneously number one on both the singles and album charts! One of my favourite dance songs from 2006 was *Call On Me* by **Eric Prydz**....

It topped the charts globally and spendt 5 weeks at number one in the UK but Mr Prydz famously dismissed it as a 25 minute "lazy" track and avoided playing it live for two decades whatttttttttttt. Ooooh and *Smack That* by **Akon** and **Eminem** was a vibe....

What a time to be alive! At the cinema **Johnny Depp** returned as **Captain Jack Sparrow** in **Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest**.

Audiences flocked to see **Daniel Craig** in **Casino Royale**....not sure why....

2006 gave us **The Da Vinci Code** and the latest **Harry Potter** instalment too. **Sacha Baron Cohen**'s **Borat** sparked endless debate and controversy while **The Devil Wears Prada** quietly became one of the best films (IMPO)....ever! What first looked like a silly glossy fashion comedy ended up actually being a razor sharp exploration of ambition and power.

> Remember to never judge a book by it's cover huns. 

More than twenty years later people are still talking about my favourite film and we even got a sequel in 2026....finally!

Although it was released in 2005 **Brokeback Mountain** was a huuuge cultural talking point throughout 2006 in the UK winning Oscars and sparking mainstream conversations about LGBTQ+ representation in cinema.

**Snakes on a Plane**, **Scary Movie 4**, **Nacho Libre**, **Marie Antoinette**, **The Queen**, **My Super Ex-Girlfriend**, **Material Girls** and **Pan's Labyrinth** were all released in 2006 as well as one of the most loved Christmas films ever: **The Holiday**. Animation also had a huge year, with **Cars** and **Ice Age: The Meltdown** proving family films could be every bit as influential as blockbuster action movies. Meanwhile, the **Nintendo Wii** arrived and promptly took over living rooms everywhere. Apple continued its dominance too. The iPod had become a must have accessory and for the first time films could be purchased directly through iTunes. I was personally obsessed with my apple green second generation **iPod Nano**! Online culture was beginning to reshape entertainment as well. **YouTube** was only a year old but was already producing viral moments like *Shoes* starring **Liam Kyle Sullivan** as **Kelly**. 

If phrases like "Let's get some shoes!" mean anything to you then erm congratulations! You honestly had to be there though. I'm sure 2006 was the year I tried getting into the new **Lacuna Coil** album, *Karmacode*....I remember someone at the time telling me if you like **Evanescence** then you'll like Lacuna Coil although I don't think they compared to Evanescence! 

Then there was **Bebo**. MySpace was still king, **Facebook** had just opened beyond university students and **Twitter** made its debut when **Jack Dorsey** sent the platform's first ever tweet reading "just setting up my twttr". (It later sold as a digital NFT for $2.9 million) but the foundations of the social media world we know today were quietly being laid. 

The 51st **Eurovision Song Contest** in 2006was held in **Athens** in **Greece** and **Lordi** from **Finland** won with *Hard Rock Hallelujah* which has become a Eurovision classic!

Our **Daz Sampson** represented the UK with *Teenage Life* but only 10 of the 39 eligible countries voted for him and his total score was 25 points placing him 19th out of the 24 acts eeeeeep although he reached the top 10 official UK charts so that was good! 

Fashion was kinda odd 20 years ago....neon colours, skinny jeans, studded belts, oversized sunglasses, checkered **Vans**, scene hair, really thick eyeliner and emo fringes were all in. I vividly remember rocking a neon green studded belt and I loved it so much!

**Lil' Kim** was released from prison in 2006 after serving 10 months of a one-year sentence for perjury annnd her 6-part reality TV series **Lil' Kim: Countdown to Lockdown** premiered on **BET** breaking network viewership records. Also she made her dramatic first major public appearance since her release at the MTV Video Music Awards, famously walking on stage in an orange prison jumpsuit and one more thing, she released the music video for her single *Whoa* from her fourth album *The Naked Truth*. Iconic.

**Katie Price** and **Peter Andre** were still together and even released a whole album together which is wild. **Paris Hilton** and **Nicole Richie** dominated magazine covers and there were quite a few very public break ups involving **Britney Spears** and **Kevin Federline**, **Reese Witherspoon** and **Ryan Phillippe** and **Jennifer Aniston** and **Vince Vaughn** which generated endless headlines. Over in reality TV land, **Lauren Conrad** left **Laguna Beach** behind for The Hills giving us six seasons of friendship drama, relationship chaos and iconic moments. Who knew **Heidi Montag** would end up being the pop star that she is today by the way?! To this day, hearing **Natasha Bedingfield**'s *Unwritten* instantly transports me back to 2006 watching The Hills. I didn't actually watch Laguna Beach though.

If you think celebrity feuds are intense now welllll 2006 was on another level. Paris Hilton and **Lindsay Lohan** had a very public fall out which provided endless material for gossip magazines before that now iconic photo of Paris, Lindsay and Britney squeezed into Paris's car became one of the defining celebrity images of the decade.

Paris also found herself at the centre of one of the strangest celebrity pranks of the era when **Banksy** secretly swapped hundreds of copies of her debut album *Paris* in record stores across the UK with altered versions featuring satirical artwork and renamed tracks. Wild. **Malcolm in the Middle** aired its final episodes. I still remember being absolutely gutted. Thankfully we got a reboot 20 years later! I've still not watched it yet though. By the year's end *A Moment Like This* (by Leona) had become one of the biggest selling singles of 2006 while the **Scissor Sisters**, **Sandi Thom** and **Shakira** rounded out the year's best sellers. 

**Girls Aloud** made chart history when *Something Kinda Ooooh* entered the official top 10 based largely on downloads, becoming one of the first British acts to benefit from the changing chart rules. 

Meanwhile **Robbie Williams** and **Jamiroquai** enjoyed chart topping albums too.

Oh the geek in me just needs to mention that archaeologists uncovered a stunning statue of **Queen Tiye** in 2006! Buried beneath the sands of **Karnak** it was hidden for more than 3,300 years.....until 2006\. Cool right?! Queen Tiye was **Tutankhamun**'s grandmother by the way. Oooh and we had another unlikely chart number one in the form of Dutch **DJ Fedde Le Grand** whose dance anthem *Put Your Hands Up for Detroit* was literally everywhere. 

I still loveeee that song! Looking back now, it's incredible how many trends, careers, websites, TV shows and cultural phenomena that still shape our lives today either exploded or quietly began in 2006\. I could write more and more but there's just too much from 2006 to squeeze in. What felt just normal in 2006 ended up being history in the making. Pop culture felt noticeably more queer in 2006 than it had just a few years earlier, right?! With **Elton John** and **David Furnish** entering into a civil partnership at the end of 2005, 2006 became the first full year in which legally recognised same sex partnerships were part of everyday life in **Britain**. Meanwhile Lance Bass, **Jake Shears**, **Ana Matronic**, Richard Newman and Nikolay Alexeyev were helping to bring LGBTQ+ visibility firmly into the mainstream.
